OceanICU Demonstrates Decision Support Tool at EU Ocean Days

OceanICU participated in the European Ocean Days kick-off event, Young Voices for the Ocean on the 3rd of March in Brussels. In addition to insightful sessions tailored to hear questions and concerns from young people around Europe as well as their activities as Blue Citizens, the event also featured art installations and exhibitions.

OceanICU joined fellow members of the EU4Ocean Coalition at the Ocean Literacy Island exhibition, where we had the opportunity to discuss the project and the concept of ocean carbon uptake with interested stakeholders; we also showcased the prototype of our Decision Support Tool (DST), demonstrating how to visualise scenarios, such as the future (modelled) evolution of ocean surface water temperatures, CO2 fluxes and chlorophyll concentrations following increases in global average air temperature. Hosted on the EDITO platform, the DST  integrates cutting-edge biogeochemical models and datasets that are being developed and refined within OceanICU.

Seen in the picture below Matteo Mikos (SSBE) gave live demonstrations of the DST prototype to interested young stakeholders from around Europe. Seen above Oleksandr Pechenkin (IrRADIARE) who chose random spots on the map of the ocean, automatically running scripts for that specific location then, modelled outputs presented the evolution of key ocean variables over the year of 2022, which can seamlessly be compared with satellite measurements from the same location, offering a visual assessment of the model’s accuracy.

OceanICU is pleased to be part of the EU4Ocean platform as it provides opportunities to directly engage with citizens interested in learning about our ocean and how to direct their activities toward a sustainable future.
