THE PEOPLE

Prof. Alex Poulton

WP3 Co-lead & WP2 | Lyell Centre, Heriot-Watt University

Focus of work – Carbonate (Counter) Pump; impact of diversity and ecology, and future risks (warming, acidification, deoxygenation)

Alex Poulton works as a Professor of Marine Ecology and Biogeochemistry at Heriot-Watt University, with an interest in how ocean biology recycles the key elements for life. In the OceanICU project, Alex is focusing on the Carbonate (Counter) Pump in terms of recognising the importance of biology in how the pump functions and its future in a warming ocean. Alex is an ocean-going researcher, having worked in all five ocean basins, and likes to examine elemental cycling from the scale of cells to global biogeochemical cycles.
