Prof. Javier Arístegui

WP4 Co-Lead & WP3 | GOB-IOCAG, University of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Javier is a full professor of marine ecology and head of the Biological Oceanography Group (GOB) at the Institute of Oceanography and Global Change (IOCAG) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain (gob-iocag.ulpgc.es). He co-leads WP4 within OceanICU, focusing on “ecosystem controls on carbon sequestration.” Specifically, he is responsible for a task addressing carbon production and respiration in the ocean interior, where he will investigate microbial respiration through the respiratory electron transport system activity. Additionally, Javier leads a task in WP3 concerning the “impacts of climate stressors – temperature and aerosol inputs (dust, volcanic ash, and wildfire/biomass burning) – on surface biogeochemistry and plankton community composition.” He is also responsible for organizing a process-oriented cruise in the subtropical and tropical Atlantic Ocean, under different environmental conditions (temperature, pH, oxygen, organic matter). The cruise is focused on experimental work for WP3 and WP4 with the aim of implementing parameterizations to feed into biogeochemical models.
