Jerry’s research focuses on applying Earth system models (ESMs) and observations to advance our understanding and prediction of the ocean carbon cycle and its feedback to future climate change. In OceanICU, he is involved in WPs 2 and 6. In WP2, he is working toward evaluating the representations of ocean biological carbon pump in an ensemble of ESMs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and investigating key physical and biogeochemical processes driving their future changes. In WP6, he is working on the implementation of new biological processes identified in OceanICU (WPs 3-4) into the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) and performing future projections. The consequences of new process implementation on future ocean carbon sequestration will be quantified. In addition, the fully interactive ESM simulations will allow the team to assess the impact of changing ocean environment (temperature, circulation, and oxygen) on the biological carbon pump and subsequently on projected climate change.
