Decision Support Tools

Design Support Tools (DSTs) are software applications that encapsulate repetitive computational tasks informed by Data Science, the results of which are displayed in a graphical format and present simulated outcomes based on various parameters. They are commonly used in business, science and industry to help subject matter experts and managers inform their decisions.

Check out the OceanICU prototype DTS on the EDITO platform via the link below or scroll down for more information on how the project is developing its DST in support of facilitating Ocean Carbon Intelligence in decision making.

OceanICU’s Decision Support Tool will provide insights into how multiple human-induced stressors such as trawling, drilling, overfishing, deep-sea mining and dredging affect oceanic carbon sequestration under various management and climate scenarios. This enables the opportunity to explore the complex tradeoffs involved in determining the optimal resource exploitation strategy.

Co-Designed with Stakeholders

The models, scenarios and user experience of the DST are being developed over the course of the project in consultation with stakeholders. Through interactive workshops, requirements have been captured and prioritised to ensure the tool is effective and delivers on its potential to aid policy makers in support of the EU Green Deal.

The current prototype release is DST V2—an interactive, process-based model of the global carbon cycle, publicly available as an application on the EU Digital Twin Ocean. It performs climate projections till 2100 at the scale of 54 Longhurst provinces–an established biogeographic partition of the global ocean that combines locations with similar properties (e.g., temperature, productivity). Users of the application can control the future scenarios being evaluated by choosing climate projections (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways*) and fisheries intensity.

In the future, additional management options will be added.

* Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are a group of five climate and socioeconomic scenarios used in research to explore how society, demographics, and economics might evolve over time, and their impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change

  • SSP1  Sustainability
  • SSP2  Middle of the Road
  • SSP3  Regional Rivalry
  • SSP4: Inequality
  • SSP5: Fossil-Fueled Development

OceanICU Webinar: Decision Support Tools

The OceanICU Decision Support Tools Webinar was a Technical Masterclass!

OceanICU provided an in depth look at how EMODnet and Copernicus Marine via the EDITO platform, are helping OceanICU use Big Data to build its decision support tools, and how the project will use Machine Learning with Big Data.

Thanks to our expert panellists Conor Delaney, Jorn Bruggeman and Patrizio Mariani of Work Package 7, and to our special guest Marina Tonino (Mercator Ocean) for the insightful look into how they are leading new innovative pathways toward providing crucial data needed in support of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”
